So basically, a RIP (Raster Image Processor) is software (even when called 'hardware RIP it is still just software, which is explained in Nicholas Hellmuth's newest report series). It's basically a preprocessor that takes various print jobs including vector art, fonts, etc, and converts them to raster images. Fiery is a RIP, a Raster Image Processor.
